"WHITEHORSE ORCHESTRA
GOES TO CHINA"

Whitehorse Orchestra, comprised of 62 musicians and 11 friends, recently travelled to the Friendship City of Shaoxing in China where it performed a collaborative concert with the students and teachers of the music faculty of Shaoxing University.

The Orchestra was received with incredible enthusiasm and unstinting generosity from both the University and the Ministry Foreign Affairs in China.  The Orchestra is most grateful for the welcome it received.

While in Shaoxing, Whitehorse Orchestra held a packed house concert for children.  With his usual flair, Music Director, Gerald Keuneman compiled an informative and fun program introducing the western instruments of the orchestra to an avid audience of young people.

A larger scale concert was held later in the tour with the orchestra accompanying six beautiful arias from different operas sung by teachers of the Shaoxing University.  The Orchestra presented two well-known Chinese pieces, Beijing News Reaches the Border and Spring Festival Overture as well as an Australian work by Colin Brumby.  The Chinese Orchestra then performed.

The climax of the evening however was the joint performance between Shaoxing University and Whitehorse Orchestra of Beethoven’s Fantasia for Piano, choir and orchestra.  With John Grayling on piano, Chinese students as soloists and the university choir ably sang their parts in German.

The tour was an outstanding success with strong friendships made between the two cultures.  It is hoped that the City of Whitehorse and in particular Whitehorse Orchestra will have the chance to reciprocate the generosity of the people of Shaoxing when they visit us here in Australia in the near future.
